What Affects the Size of the Job
How much your driveway needs depends more on water than on age. A driveway that has just lost some rock after a few hard rains is a different job than one with ruts deep enough to catch a bumper or washouts that come back every time it storms. We look at how the water is moving across the drive — where it collects, where it’s cutting a channel, where it just needs a truckload of fresh gravel — before we decide what the fix actually is.
Length and grade matter too. A short flat driveway off the county road is a quick regrade. A long driveway with a slope, or one that crosses a low spot that floods every spring, usually needs the drainage addressed first – otherwise you’re paying to fix the same washout again next year. Do you fix the drainage problem or just add more gravel?
Both, when that’s what it needs. Dumping gravel on a driveway that floods just gives you the same washout with fresh rock on top. We look at where the water is actually going before we decide whether this is a regrade-and-refill job or one that needs the drainage corrected first.
My driveway floods every time it rains. Can that actually be fixed?
Usually. Most repeat washouts come down to water finding the same low spot every time it rains. Once that channel is regraded and reshaped so water moves off the drive instead of pooling or cutting through it, the problem typically stops repeating.
How do I know if this is a cleanup job or if I need a whole new driveway built?
If the base of the driveway is still solid and it just needs regrading, fresh rock, or the edges cut back, that’s cleanup. Do you clear brush that’s grown over the driveway edges too?
Yes – cutting back weeds and brush along the edges so the full width is usable again is part of a standard cleanup. If the growth has spread well past the driveway into the surrounding property, that becomes a brush removal job instead.
